Slaying the Lernaean Hydra

On knees to lift the evil writhing Hydra into wind and light — the mystical 9th head of power buried under a Rock. Kundalini with Fire of Mind and Spirit conquer the entrenched reptilian instincts to become Asklepios and Healing Shaktipat; Scorpio wrestles again with Antares (cf. Gemini) as Ophiuchus and Hercules; Victory when Hydra seen as unit.

The Crises of the Soul — Battleground, Birthplace/Labor, and Burning Ground — All Testing is self-engineered, no matter how clouded one’s apprehension. All initiation is self-administered, otherwise it would not be fully conscious. With Capricorn, Scorpio rules the Twelve Labors of the Sun God Hercules, and particularly the Hydra’s Nine Tests of psychological hygiene (!) In Scorpio we find how spiritual values and life are anchored in daily ephemera.

Scorpio, the Mental Unit, and Its Four Subplanes
Scorpio progresses through a series of stages during its stimulation (and enforcement) of spiritual evolution.

1. The work of using the mind to master the psyche, the emotions, and their reflexes. Behavioral therapy was a tepid beginning which has been supplemented by Cognitive Therapy, and now Intensive Cognitive Therapy, as humanity is becoming more familiar with its own constitution and more comfortable with the recognition of what is abstract and ‘invisible’ in the vernacular. (Intensive cognitive therapy is yet another instance of healing arising out of the Scorpio battlefield and the damages of War, in this case the mental shock and shattering of PTSD.)

2. The work (for mentally polarized types) of distinguishing among the various forms of Logical Fallacy in service to clear self-realization and constructive (rather than media-moronic) forums of social disputation.

3. The work of Dissipating Glamour in the Three Worlds through mastering the Eye or spotlight of the Soul as pure abstract mind through the Formula for dissipating Glamour — Preparation, Naming-Protecting-Focusing, Direction, Will, Projection, Penetration, Withdrawal.

4. The work of Dispelling Illusion takes place during discipleship, supervised from the three higher mental subplanes by the soul itself in combat with the seven forms of Illusion, speaking technically in DK’s terms. (GWP 21) This involves the six stages of the challenge of dispelling Illusion for those experiencing the Presence and developing capacity for Identification. (GWP 53-68)

5. The transference of solar angel to solar Lord in preparation for future rounds and the next solar system takes place when the Dweller on the Threshold of initiation (maya-glamour-illusion) is faced and all attachment to dualism is dispatched. It is parallel to what took place in the previous solar system which gave us our lunar lord (Barhishad pitris) ancestors of the VIth CH human animal form, as distinct from that system’s lunar angels and the generic term lunar pitris (‘fathers’ or [less-evolved] ‘ancestors’). The term ‘lord’ tends to suggest outright mastery more clearly than, say, ‘major domo’ of the personality elementals.

Commentary on Manas on the Lower Four Manasic Subplanes

The approach of this essay is to discuss the mental unit, governed by Libra (EA 302), to indicate methods for its eventual subjugation through Scorpio’s hierarchic ruler Mercury, involving the 9-fold tests that confirm Libra’s decision to “reverse the wheel” from the depths of the self-confident unrushing Taurus bull.

"It is only during the later stage [last third of the human pilgrim's journey] that a man differentiates between will and desire, and between his mental body and desire body." (CF 1103-4)

Leaving stage (1.) above for Introductory and Orthodox astrological discussion (quite interesting in its own right!), I’d like to introduce four aspects of logic which have been delineated by Edwin Shneidman (1966) and his doctoral students for use in psycho-social assessment.

Why Study the Mental Unit and Its Four Lower Subplanes?

The Ego or Thinker in the Causal Body does not use manas to think or maintain continuity of consciousness.

A final point here needs emphasising. Occultly understood, the five Kumaras or the five Mind-born Sons of Brahma are the embodiers of this manasic force on our planet; but They only reflect (in the Hierarchy of our planet) the function of the five Kumaras or Rishis who are the Lords of the five Rays manifesting through the four lesser planets and the synthesising planet. These five Kumaras are the channels for this force and one of Them, the Lord of the planet Venus, embodies in Himself the function of the fifth Hierarchy. [...] To word it otherwise, through Their work man can become conscious without the manasic vehicle, for manas is but the form through which a higher principle is making itself known. (CF 703)

This bespeaks the nature of the relationship of the two major triangles — Mercury/Earth/Mars, and Saturn/Venus/Earth. Saturn, Venus and Earth are the focus of (solar) systemic kundalini circulation at present. Mercury/Earth/Mars have a role to play in the future and in the ‘inner round’ associated with our planet. The triangle of Mars-Earth-Mercury are tangible symbols of kundalini latent (Mars), awakening (Earth), and fully integrated or expressing (Hermes/Mercury). This can reveal the nature and ‘place’ of manas in its undifferentiated state (citta) as distinct and utilized by the Plan and Purpose aspects of the Triad or Monad which are directing Mind in a much larger context. From this point of view, Manas (as citta) and its four spirillae are used only for construction. Mind as the Thinker in the Causal Body is a full expression of the 5th principle and unfoldment of the 5th spirilla — a member of the 5th kingdom in nature, that of the Soul.

In order to salvage Brotherhood or Fellowship out of Humanity, it is necessary to understand the human mental constitution both esoterically and scientifically (i.e., technically and in detail) in order to be somewhat effective. Self-evident work and service along the 2-4-6 line is fine, needed and important to integrate, but does not suffice for mentally-polarized or pro-active types who need to become fully conscious bridge builders (as in Pontifex maximus) to the higher planes, who need to become the Path itself in their small way, and establish various ‘liaison offices’ where aspirants, probationers and disciples can accelerate service work through mutual help in actualizing the new spiritual sciences, including esoteric psychology, for instance.

The Manasic “Lower Quarternary” and its ‘Logical’ Character

It should be reiterated here that the mental sheath or envelope is composed from only 4 subplanes of manasic substance at present (CF 1098). Therefore, to get an overview, this subject will be treated from the point of view of the 5, not the 4 — the strategic situation of the first of the ‘formless’ manasic subplanes where the 3 divinities (Mahadeva, Vishnu, Brahma) meet (CF 848), reflecting the Atmic planetary mental body and plane, or the ‘higher manasic’ plane of the Rays, whereupon the Ray Lords and Ray Lord aspect of the incarnating ‘lesser Heavenly Man’ may be found. The reflection of the atmic in the manasic plane has its planetary correspondence in the 5 Liberated Hierarchies reflected in the Makara, or Vth Creative Hierarchy soul/personalities and inherent duality of the present human rootrace (a rootrace lasts millions of years). This factor of only four inherited mental spirillae most basically illustrates our 4th Order solar system, ensouled by our solar Logos Who is developing response to vibrations of the 5th Order. (CF 554, 605) It must also be considered that it is on the lower 3rd (5th) subplane of the Three Planes in the Three Worlds that the majority of humanity finds its consciousness imprisoned as souls (CF 324), or as ‘prisoners of the planet’ (See WM) during this 2nd Ray solar system and this 4th Round.

The Ego assumes control when 4th subplane matter is built into the vehicles of the Ego or Thinker, and 5th, 6th and 7th subplane matter has been virtually eliminated from the sheathes. When 3rd subplane substance dominates the vehicles, the Ego finds itself upon the Path (WM 113). These 4 lower mental subplanes associated with the "lower quarternary" of the human personality, house four aspects of logic which have been delineated by Edwin Shneidman (1966), who ignores or leaves unnamed the implicit 5th (6th-7th) or synthesizing faculty or principle.

7th Subplane (positive) IDIOLOGIC ["separated lives"] [ — names of the lives that compose the subplanes in brackets... (CF 1107) ]

Idiological faculties, idiosyncrasies and fallacies of reasoning, and cognitive habits, tactics, and maneuvers; personal mental equipment and strictly conventionally conditioned and conformist communicative faculties. Idiosyncrasies imply limits and habits afflicting choice, resourcefulness, or freedom, yet enhance or aggravate the personality focus and provide or obstruct material opportunity.

Polarization on this subplane:
– survival materialism – ‘heads down, please’
– body language based on sacral, heart, or head personality polarization (Jacques LeCoq training)

6th Subplane (negative) CONTRALOGIC ["points of frictional activity," the "heat producers"]

Contralogic underlies and discloses devotional-religious and epistemic belief justifications based upon Idiologic. Attachments to these belief systems or ideologies, with "intellectual" rationales and "rational" justifications, are essentially either used in a defensive reactionary or in a well-meaning responsive manner. Attachment to the inevitable consequence of brute force, dysfunction, or simple limitation which these unreflective ideological addictions/reactions necessarily imply or generate still remains largely unavoidable.

Polarization on this subplane:
– unconscious implicit assumption that conditioning (positive or negative) makes them spontaneous (or victims), and not consumer automatons and slaves
– solar-plexus polarization of gross kama-manasic congealed attitudes substituting for thought
– acute sensitivity to borrowed attitudes and behaviors fostering social conformity; personal-popularity anxiety
– Tibetans note that religion is the major distinction between the human and animal realm (in the Six Realms), the human realm ruled by desire and the animal realm by ignorance

5th Subplane (positive) PSYCHOLOGIC ["interacting points of cyclic momentum" — duality, dichotomies]

What kind of a more complete and somewhat distinct person can this be, given the Idiologic and Contralogic equipment, capacity, and foci?
Capacity and ability to coordinate faculties and beliefs with society and environment; cognitive maneuverability; ability to make choices based upon analytic appraisal of content, meaning, and personal character. The Personality begins to integrate on this subplane.

Polarization on this subplane:
– “borrowed thought” – thought based on borrowed formulations, often ill-applied;
– technicians who think in black & white, knowledge interests more related to information and analysis;
– wisdom is of the gross mundane type;
– concept of intelligence or wisdom as a balance of material/emotional/knowledge interests;
– ambitious optimizing ‘yuppie’ mentality subject to status anxiety;
– ‘yuppie’-type self-interested careerist (as distinct from actual career dedication, mission or dharma);
– obsession with social categorizations and parochial/familial role identification;
– international interests associated with self-willed and self-interested ambition (rape, pillage, fraud exemplified by their ‘superiors’) and advancement in an essentially non-admitted (and certainly non-challenged) feudal system and order.

4th Subplane (negative) PAEDALOGIC ["absorbers of the above and the below," "transmitting faces of the 4th order"]

Paedalogic is the refinement of using the 3 lower logical modes and interactions to modify and modulate communicative voice and meta-communicative appeal. In other words, it is the result of a strong desire to communicate one’s ideas, feelings or disclose one’s distinct personality interests. This is further inspired by a desire to teach, which challenges the native to develop the capacity to address the spectrum of types of intelligence, styles of interaction, and modes of learning and understanding found in multi-dimensional society.

In actuality it prepares the 4-fold ground of the Mental Unit (technically speaking), found focused upon this subplane, for intelligent use by the 3rd subplane Soul or divine Ego. It is at this stage that a true system of rational metaphysics (as distinct from 4th subplane doctrinal or epistemic formulations — or 6th subplane raw dogma) can be constructed and subjected to human intellectual and spiritual discourse.
[Paedalogic, which might well be denominated dialogic, dialectic, or Bateson's deutero-[logic] learning process by which we learn our distinctly human style of metacommunication (Berman 217), among strata of affect, logic, and both.]

Here on the 4th subplane we find a buddhic subplane correspondence – the plane of Devachan from which most of developed humanity reincarnates after the rending process and disposal of that proportion of sheathes which the soul can no longer use for ‘spiritual paedagogy.’

Polarization on this subplane:
– beginning to step out and use mind innovatively;
– intelligentsia of the period, yet still probationers in essence;
– possibility of awakening to spiritual aspiration;
– begin to become conscious of social factors, true international (interdependent) and knowledge interests;
– beginning to recognize causality in terms of ‘interdependent origination’;
– beginning of response to the causal body (CF 431), i.e., making contact with the Soul

The 5th / 3rd Manasic Subplane — METALOGIC

It seems useful to characterize in similar technical terms the first subplane upon which the causal body is found, hoping it might be useful for general understanding or productive insight. Hope so, anyway. This is the subplane where the Intuition, esoterically and technically speaking, begins to develop and have impact in the world of the disciple.

The polarization examples for the four preceding lower subplanes have tended to be characterized in a ‘negative’ light — to make clear what a soul-infused personality is NOT.

3rd Subplane (positive) METALOGIC — Abstract Planes of the Soul begin here.... If some schools of philosophy describe consciousness as being aware of being aware, or conceiving the thinker thinking, then metalogic can be construed as the apprehension of constructive logic or structural modes of logic by an inherently and necessarily higher or more inclusive logical rationale, paradigm, or point of view; what might better be termed the threshold and door to the intuition. It has aptly been pointed out that logic serves only to clarify or delineate what is not. As to what is perceived, sensed or apprehended, logic has very little to say, as the mystical philosopher Jakob Boehme once remarked. This realization is but a lower correspondence to what has been called, on the philosophic plane, the "doctrine of negation" expressed most cogently in Buddhist Madhyamika epistemic philosophy.

In another sense, metalogic might be termed trialogic or trialectic, bringing in a stabilizing third factor — viewed in ascending/descending order as an inclusive communicative exchange incentive, as a reconciling, interactive, or synergistic participating factor or force, or as heuristic, communicative, or spiritually orienteering synthetic force and energy.

Just as thinking of thinking of thinking can be regarded alternately as infinite regress or as holographic paradigm threshold upon the Infinite, conducing to intuition – depending upon the directed point of view or point of awareness – so metalogic can be regarded as the Eye of the Soul directed upon the 4-fold ground of cognitive permutations engaged with their phenomenological matrices (See Guenther, Matrix of Mystery). This 5th spiritual Eye of the Soul allied with the third eye is a human reflection of the 5 Kumaras active at present and the 5 Dhyani Buddhas — the sumtotal of manas. In other words, one can join in and participate somewhat with the groups of egos working on 5th, 6th, and 7th manasic spirillae.

In Buddhist practice, the above can be understood as the formal or traditional 5-fold mandala offering of the mind itself in all its multileveled symbolic significance (see any text on Mahamudra or any Tantric sadhana). It is on this level that conflict resolution and waging peace, expressing the 4th Ray Soul of Humanity, become real psychosocial options. Here Mercury Vision supercedes Mars confrontation, conflict and crisis addiction. Hence the international movement for Ministries and Departments of Peace.

Esoteric Commentary

Given Mars associated in the general population with inherited instinct-intellect, and the mental unit on the 4th subplane constituting a limit on mental capacity determined and illustrated partially by 8-mental-chakra development, it should be recognized how useful it is for human society to have individual autonomic or instinctive control and response mechanisms associating the human and mammalian with the ‘reptilian’ brain.

Eight is not the number of Mars but of Mercury’s subjugation and integration of Mars with vision and life purpose. Hence the 8 mental centers of 12 petals each (96 total) representing the undeveloped Ajna center of undeveloped humanity, the Ajna ruled alternately by Venus and Mercury. (CF 860) These 8 centers are situated on the mental subplanes in an optimal position to control the lower personality vehicles — given the degree and level of consciousness at a given native’s disposal. The development of the manasic chart may well need to precede that of the astral body associated with Taurus as a simple preventive measure. The number eight also shows up associated directly with the 16-petalled throat center associated in Tibetan Buddhism with the Eight Knowledge Holders and Speech and the eight-fold Buddha Mind mandalas in general. At a later stage this noble eightfold 'Path' is implicated in the disintegration of the causal body as the pilgrim merges with the centers of the lesser (incarnate) Heavenly Man.

"...eight steams of living fire, which extend to the tips of the four love petals and the four sacrifice petals. This eight-fold energy is atma-buddhi." (CF 1118-9, emphasis mine)

In terms of Mars and Spiral-Cyclic Motion, the Mars Heliocosms (conjunct and opposition for the first ‘outer’ planet), the conjunct [□] and opposition [■] heliocosms return very close to the same degree every 40 years. This represents the alternating confrontational or conflicted (self-destructive?) versus the assertive principled character (self-possession) positions giving opportunity to those who have a lifespan of the orbit of Uranus or more, to learn lessons in one instance, or prove one’s stalwart character and principles in another (after 40 years’ time). This is an intriguing instance of Mars and Venus working together — eight times five (40), and is exceptionally useful in tracking major lifetime influences and assessing the individual’s capacity to master Mars and the VIth CH vehicles/forms (which is, after all, one of the major planetary projects at hand).

This overall process is the expression of the passive or abstract Rays 2-4-6 ruled by Jupiter-Mercury-Mars in the present world period, mindful that Jupiter and Mercury govern the Mutable Cross as well as the planetary soul and psychic body. Mars represents the human animal forms that are being redeemed, the refuse from prior cycles that is magnetized into collective form by the planetary etheric system. Another way of seeing this is the work of Jupiter Monadic Soul (solar/planetary Heavenly Man and Ray) conditioning Mercury Psyche (planetary Entity) to mould the Mars gross physical body accumulating around the planetary etheric system (Venus) composed of egoic groups. After the 6th and 7th Rounds have done their work (or during the 7th Round in particular) the ruling and supervising Rays and governing planets will undoubtedly change.

The work of these centers and cycles all unfold and take expression in society through the evolution of collective and group institutions (Jupiter), scientific and social technologies (Mercury), reinforced (or entrenched) by beliefs and ideologies (Mars) and MESS (GWP 22) that create the status quo establishment of any period and its characteristic forms. These forms are inevitably vulnerable to Ray One and Ray Two (and Ray Three) impacts and cycles of destruction over time.

This evolutionary process takes place on the Mutable Cross (Jupiter-Mercury) under the rule of the Fixed Cross through the oscillating influences of Scorpio-Taurus (EA 398, 223, 225, 381-2) on nations and civilizations; cultures emerging under Leo-Aquarius. This apparent illusion of Fixed Cross-on-Mutable parallels that of Humanity as a unit taking incarnation on the Mutable Cross through the sign Cancer during involution. It is a window on to the nature of fourth-dimensional motion.

With the oscillating Taurus-Scorpio axis in mind (EA 398), especially in relation to national entities and groups, it might make sense in some few rare cases to check whether there is not a shift in chakra triangles — specifically 7 Head centers/Heart/‘reptilian’ Throat being subsumed by 7 Head centers/Heart/ 2 Many-petalled Head centers. This would necessarily involve the Alta Major transference experience at some phase.

Mars / Mercury

Understanding of the Mars / Mercury dilemma is a strong theme in both Scorpio and Aries. The dilemma faced by Humanity is purification and reconstruction are historically based on either War or Vision. This first of all implicates the fact that the majority of humanity will not think unless presented with a physical or psychological conflict or crisis. Humanity is conflict- or crisis-addicted in terms of thinking for itself on its own terms. Much better to slide back into the comfortable junior high-school mentality of popularity contests and careerist competition in general. But its serious side-effects are the long-term implications of indulging in avoidance or denial. Given its stock set of social groups (e.g., predators/consumers, socially-conscious/anti-intellectual), Humanity is periodically forced by circumstances and demagogues to decide between a renewal or purification process via a passive slide into War versus the more intrepid choice of renewal, improvement and reconstruction through Vision. We’ve just had 8 years of horror to drive this lesson in, but social evolution sometimes appears sedimentary in pace. It is important to face Maya with indifference and Glamour with unremitting Light.

At the same time, this understanding (Mars/Mercury dilemma) provides a platform of mutual recognition in consciousness from which disciples can communicate (telepathically or virtually) their insights as Trained and intelligent Observers. Intelligence has nothing to do with cleverness of the lower mind, but is the fluidity of exchange between the triad –especially buddhi– and the ‘formless’ causal subplanes, remaining unconditioned by chitta or mental substance. This can be exemplified by such ‘formless’ methods used in multiple group contexts for immediate creative work addressing planetary situations and needs, as well as applied with awareness in stimulatory and initiatory work.

This platform in consciousness (a “Society of Illumined and Organized Minds” operating strictly on the mental plane) is increasingly being recognized by those who are subjugating instinct to spirit.

When the Jupiter influence becomes strong and powerful in this sign [Gemini], it indicates the initiate and the rapidly attained "dualism in synthesis" of soul and spirit. Through the activity of Mercury, the man whose Sun is in Gemini is aided to attain the synthesis of soul and form; through the activity of Jupiter, the man whose rising sign is Gemini is enabled to attain the conscious integration of soul and spirit. Note these two points for they are of real significance. The conflict which produces these stages in consciousness is fostered by the indirect influence of the planet Mars. Mars carries the war into the very depth of circumstance, environment and being, and confers at the same time such devotion to the visioned objective—as seen at any particular point upon the path—that final failure is rendered impossible. Towards the end of the evolutionary process, the disciple begins to respond consciously to the fourth indirect influence—that of Pluto, producing the death of the hindering factors and of all that prevents synthesis. Pluto, as it affects Gemini, brings about the death or the finish of the separative, instinctual nature, for this is the factor which lies behind all dualism; it is inherent in what The Secret Doctrine calls the principle of ahankara or the awareness of the separative, isolated ego; it is inimical for aeons to the aspiration of the imprisoned soul, focussed within or identified with some aspect of the personality, and, in a later stage, with the personality itself. (EA 365-66)

It is not a matter of repressing instinct, but still hearing it while subjugating it to Vision (Mercury). This is essentially the challenge of dispatching the Dweller on the Threshold, or the personality-tinctured accumulation of delusional attachments represented by the inertia of maya, glamour and illusion remaining in the constitution.
This dispatch is accomplished by Unity, Reintegration (Yoga) and the signs ruled by Jupiter — Virgo, Aquarius, Pisces, and Leo — the signs “basically concerned with the expression of consciousness on the outer external planes of expression or with the fusion of soul and form in order to demonstrate fully a state of awareness” in association with the Three Major Constellations. (EA 468)

The (telepathic) conversation among spiritual students and disciples in Scorpio unfolds and expresses through Gemini (fellowship), and with initiates through Pisces and its effect upon the masses. Pluto simultaneously represents the lowest aspect of Scorpio together with its soul and hierarchic rulership of Pisces salvation and redemption. We may be reminded here of the mystery of the Ist Creative Hierarchy ruled by Pisces.
This array unfolds and explains somewhat the role of Pluto, Pisces and Gemini associated with Shambhala and the mental unit of the Eternal Youth, the Logoic Sirian-kama-manasic ‘Entity’¹ governing planet Earth and the (neoplatonic) “prisoners of the planet” subordinate to solar Aries-Pluto, Leo-Jupiter and the planetary center ruled by Leo-Saturn.

I use this term planetary ‘Entity’ in its cosmic sense, not on the systemic planes of the lesser Heavenly Man (HMan in incarnation), which are nevertheless implicated in planetary affairs. The Lesser Heavenly Man’s nature and identity as soul-aspect Heavenly Man per se is focused on the cosmic buddhic plane, where vibrations of the 5th order (solar atmic Sirian Ray Lord) are not fully in control. (The Rishi representative Ray Lord on the cosmic buddhic plane fulfills this function.) Just so, the solar Greater Heavenly Man has not subjugated the cosmic buddhic subplanes as a solar cosmic-atmic Sirian-System ² Ray Lord through His Principles and Centers.

² The Sun Sirius is distinct from the Sirian System or constellation of (7) stars. The seven stars of the Sirian System of which our Sun is a member (the "seven solar systems"), is found between Ursa Major and the Pleiades, astronomically speaking.

We know that Saturn is associated with the IIIrd creative hierarchy related to the lower Builders of the Lesser Heavenly Man’s mental body and the restriction of these ‘triple flowers’ to formless levels within the planetary ring-pass-not. Mercury, Vulcan and Sun with Scorpio on hierarchic levels are the key in this respect for the opportunity of work on the ‘Inner Round.’

The dynamic between Libra ruling the mental unit and Aries associated with the soul intention of the evolving mental permanent atom is clarified by the relation among Ursa Major, Aries-Libra, and Sun. (EA 466) Aries is enabled by Libra to function in the formless worlds, a state of being superceding that of consciousness opening on to a much vaster ‘field of evolution,’ quite likely associated with the Sirian System (constellation) related to the Seven Paths of the Higher Evolution.

The Monad's twofold psychic nature (two higher principles):

In speaking of Scorpio, let's recognize that we are also speaking of the the Scorpio-Taurus Axis related to Mars and the Seven Solar Systems. (EA 467) While the "seven solar systems" are undoubtedly directly related to the Sirian System (the star Sirius its head center and our Sun the heart), each of these Sirian System stars also has a direct relation to the seven (or 10) constellations of the 7 Cosmic Logoi, and it will be investigated for millennia just which stars and triangle of stars in each of these constellations is active, and what is the nature of their pralaya periods. This will come with greater understanding of the star systems that surround our Local System, the Gould Belt, a tiny sub-galaxy on the Orion Arm of our Milky Way galaxy — our home.

In Scorpio the Solar Angel / Dweller on the Threshold duality is superceded by the Angel of the Presence.
